Prevalence of erectile dysfunction among healthy and sexually active Malaysian men aged 18 to 39 years

A recent study published in the journal Sexual Medicine found that erectile dysfunction (ED) is more common among young Malaysian men than many may expect. The research focused on healthy and sexually active men aged between 18 and 39 years old, using a standard questionnaire to assess their sexual function. Among the 361 men analysed, about one in three (approximately 33%) reported experiencing some degree of erectile difficulty, while around 4% reported severe symptoms.

The study also identified several factors linked to a higher likelihood of ED, including lower income levels, lower sexual desire, and certain sexual orientation groups. Although the participants were considered generally healthy, the findings suggest that erectile issues can still occur in younger men and should not be overlooked. The researchers highlighted the importance of early awareness, proper screening, and open conversations about men’s health  including physical and mental well-being. Overall, the study underscores that erectile dysfunction is not only an issue affecting older men, and that younger adults may also benefit from early evaluation and support if they experience symptoms.
