Consultation & Assessment

- Determine whether HIFU is suitable for your condition
You will have the opportunity to ask questions and discuss expectations and outcomes.
Pre-Procedure Preparation
You may be advised to:
- Fast for several hours before treatment
- Temporarily stop certain medications
- Arrange for someone to accompany you home
- Note that non-surgical options like radiotherapy require coming to hospital every weekday (Monday to Friday) for 4 weeks to complete treatment
Clear instructions will be provided by your healthcare team.
During the Procedure
Sedation or Anaesthesia
Depending on your condition and treatment area, the procedure may be performed under:
- Mild sedation
- Regional anaesthesia
- General anaesthesia
Your comfort and safety are always prioritised.
Targeted Ultrasound Treatment
Using real-time imaging guidance:
- The doctor carefully identifies the treatment area
- Focused ultrasound waves are delivered to the targeted tissue
- The energy generates controlled heat that destroys abnormal cells
You will not see or feel any incisions being made.
Duration
The procedure typically takes between 1 to 3 hours, depending on:
- The size of the area being treated
- The number of treatment zones required
- The complexity of your condition
After the Procedure
Recovery & Observation
After treatment:
- You will be monitored for a short period
- Vital signs will be checked
- The care team ensures you are stable before discharge
Mild Discomfort
Some patients may experience:
- Mild soreness
- Temporary swelling
- Slight fatigue
These symptoms are usually short-lived and manageable with simple medication.
Returning Home
Most patients:
- Go home on the same day
- Resume light activities shortly after
- Attend follow-up appointments as scheduled
