Preparations for CT Scan

Below is what you can expect before, during, and after your CT scan.

Before Your CT Scan

Preparation depends on the type of scan you are having.

1. Eating & Drinking

  • Without contrast: Usually no special preparation required.
  • With contrast injection: You may be asked to fast (no food) for 4 before the scan.
  • Drink plain water.

2. Medications

  • Continue your regular medications unless your doctor advises differently.

3. Inform Our Team If You:

  • Are pregnant or might be pregnant
  • Have kidney problems
  • Have a history of allergies (especially to previous contrast injection)
  • Have asthma or thyroid conditions

4. Clothing & Personal Items

  • Remove metal objects (jewellery, spectacles, hairpins, belts)
  • You may be asked to change into a hospital gown

During Your CT Scan

What to Expect:

  • You will lie on a motorised scanning table
  • The table moves slowly through a donut-shaped scanner
  • The scan is painless and usually takes only a few minutes
  • You may hear soft whirring sounds from the machine
  • You might be asked to hold your breath briefly

If Contrast Is Used:

  • A small IV line will be inserted into your arm
  • You may feel warm sensation and metallic taste for a few seconds during injection; this is temporary and normal.

Our radiographers will guide you throughout the procedure.

After Your CT Scan

If No Contrast Was Used:

  • You can resume normal activities immediately

If Contrast Was Used:

  • Drink plenty of water to help flushing it from your body.
  • Mild warmth or slight nausea may occur but usually passes quickly
  • Seek medical attention if you experience rash, itching, or breathing difficulty (rare)

Results

  1. Images will be reviewed by our radiologist.
  2. CT scan images and report can be accessed through the SunMed Go mobile application. Hardcopy image and report are available upon request.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

No. A CT scan is painless and non-invasive. You will lie comfortably on a scanning table while the machine captures images of your body.
The entire procedure may take 5–15 minutes. The actual scanning time is often just a few seconds.
It depends on your test:
  • Without contrast: Usually no fasting required.
  • With contrast injection: You may need to fast for 4 hours before the scan.
Our team will inform you in advance.
Contrast dye is a special liquid that highlights blood vessels on the scan. It is generally safe. You may feel:
  • A warm sensation
  • A metallic taste in your mouth
These effects are temporary. Allergic reactions are rare, and our team is fully prepared to manage them.
If you are pregnant or think you may be pregnant, please inform our staff before the scan. Your doctor will assess whether the scan is necessary or recommend an alternative imaging method.
Yes. CT scans can be safely performed on children when medically necessary. The scanning settings are adjusted according to age and size.
Yes. If no contrast is used, you can return to normal activities immediately. If contrast is used, you will be monitored briefly for any allergic reaction before being discharged from the department.
