Electrophysiology
Electrophysiologists are cardiologists with subspecialty expertise in diagnosing and treating heart rhythm disorders, also known as cardiac arrhythmias. Their primary role is to assess the electrical activity of the heart and manage conditions such as atrial fibrillation, supraventricular tachycardia, ventricular tachycardia, and bradycardia.
They perform advanced diagnostic procedures like electrophysiology (EP) studies to map abnormal heart rhythms and identify their source. Interventional procedures include catheter ablation to eliminate faulty electrical pathways and the implantation of cardiac devices such as pacemakers, implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs), and cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) devices.
Electrophysiologists are responsible for both acute and long-term management of patients, ensuring precise device programming, medication optimization, and close monitoring. Their work helps reduce symptoms, prevent complications such as stroke and sudden cardiac death, and improve overall cardiac function and patient quality of life.
